One of the more inventive 2D platformers on the Wii U, and one of the best platforming games of all time, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze represents the absolute pinnacle of what Nintendo and Retro are capable of in the platforming genre. And whilst 2D platforming games may not be bonafide system sellers in this day and age, it’s worth noting that they still have their fans.

When Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was first released, it was met with some fairly tepid reviews – with Metro arguing that “Tropical Freeze is a good game, and aficionados of the genre will love it, but it does absolutely nothing to move forward either the Donkey Kong franchise, 2D platformers in general, or the case for buying a Wii U“. However, once the game had been out for a while (and the dust was allowed to settle), gamers soon realised that it was a bit of a masterpiece – with Neogaf in particular singing praises about the game on a regular basis.

Tropical Freeze is on my Top 3 games of all time. I’m up to World 6 in Hard Mode. It’s…. HARD. But fair. It’s an incredible game. The Temple levels are the best. The boss fights are all really good, they test you, you feel real accomplishment after each one.I mean, I don’t know what else stacks up to it. It’s a great platformer from star to finish, maybe the best ever. I have over 80 hours in the game, that’s crazy. Most of it from time in Hard Mode, but that’s how much I love the game… I’ll replay the same level over and over and over again and never get frustrated enough to quit. Mostly because the visuals, the controls, and THE MUSIC is so good, you just keep on coming back.Again, one of my most favorite video games of all time. I hope to actually finish Hard Mode someday.” – Adam Prime (Neogaf Forumite)

Even though Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze can be had for less money, it’s worth bearing in mind that the cheaper version is actually part of the ‘Nintendo Selects’ range – with far tackier packaging. This however is actually for the original version (which hardly ever drops in price to such a low value).
