As a free-roaming first-person 3D adventure that's set on a deserted ship which is stranded at sea, Journey Beyond The Edge Of The World shares much of its gameplay lineage to puzzle-solving walking simulator titles like Return of the Obra Dinn and Everyone's Gone to the Rapture. With that said however, what makes the game stand out (apart from its use of pixelated retro graphics that are reminiscent of the PS2 era) is its use of sound - whereby the player finds themselves immersed in a curious mix of ambient music tracks and fully spatial sound experiences. Indeed, as part of this, Markus Koepke credits himself as the sole creator who has made everything within the game (including music, design, code, graphics, editing, etc).
I spoke to Markus Koepke about his upcoming Journey Beyond The Edge Of The World game, and was able to ask him about his background as a game developer, how he's been able to overcome challenges in the past, what tips he would give to other aspiring game developers, and how he feels about increased competition in the indie gaming space (due to industry layoffs).
