Phantom Blade Zero – interview with Will Chen (CEO and Publishing Director at S-Game U.S.)

As a spiritual reboot of the Rainblood series, Phantom Blade Zero has been getting a lot of attention from soulslike fans, even though the developer (S-Game) has been quick to argue that the game is actually similar in spirit to action hack and slash classics like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry. It's for this reason that the game has received so much acclaim, as fans have been thoroughly impressed by its sword combat.
I spoke to Will Chen (CEO and Publishing Director at S-Game US) about Phantom Blade Zero, and also got his opinion on why the game has been able to impress so many gamers, despite it being developed by "less than 40 people". I also got his perspective on how S-Game is positioning the game's development to ensure that it appeals to as wide an audience as possible. Enjoy!

Will Chen, how long have you been with S-Game?
I was part of the founding team back in 2012, and until 2017 I was COO of the company. And then afterwards, I joined other startups for a few years. And then I re-joined S-Game last year and am now based in Los Angeles.
