Published by Devolver Digital earlier this year, Children of the Sun got rave reviews across the board, with websites like Eurogamer heaping praise on the game by gushingly stating: "Children of the Sun is a deliciously dark slab of all my favourite things served up in an astonishingly novel way. Don't miss it."
Described as a "tactical third-person puzzle-shooter", the game presents itself as a heady concoction of trippy visuals with drone-like soundscapes that wouldn't look (and sound) out of place from what could be the stage backdrop of a post-rock concert. And whilst music was definitely an inspiration for Rene Rother, what distinguished Children of the Sun from the German based developer's previous efforts in making "arty atmospheric pieces" was that on this occasion, it was "the first time that we’ve actually had a gameplay mechanic".
I sat down with Rene Rother (as the solo developer of Children of the Sun) in order to find out a little bit more about him and his game development background, what attracted Devolver Digital to him and his project, what tips he would give to other developers in trying to attain "success", and what he thinks the future holds for indie developers at a time when so many AAA companies are laying...
